This page shows how to get visky started and load some data and packages. For complete details, consult the run-time help and man pages.
When visky starts up for the first time, it makes a main menu bar and an empty map. To display map features, select a map package from the Map data menu. In this demo, the map package is oklahoma.
Initial display
After the map data loads, you can add more features and functions from the Package menu. Loading a package adds menus and features, which vary from package to package. To learn more about the application, select Show help in the main menu. A window will appear with information about the window or map item under the cursor. For complete details, consult the man pages. Basic map
When you select Exit in the main menu (or type q, Control-q, or Alt-q), the application will prompt for the name of a directory in which to save session information. Enter the name of a directory, or choose Default, which will be a directory named .visky in your home directory. The application will save information about the current session in files in this directory. To restore the session, set the VISKY_PARAMS variable to the chosen directory before running visky, or give the directory name on the command line (e.g. visky ${HOME}/.visky). Otherwise, visky starts with its initial blank map. The parameter directory will contain text files with internal documentation. You can edit these files between sessions to modify the application start up ahead of time. You can have any number of parameter directories. Just specify the one you want at startup.
